Looking for a good book on Zionism?
Let's see. Zionism is either the national liberation movement of the Jews, so that like all other nations they could return to their homeland in Israel...or, if you believe the United Nations, it's the cause of all the world's problems including the common cold. Here at the Jewish Book Mall, we're quite sure it's the first definition.
Zionism began with Abraham, who left everything familiar in comfortable Mesopotamia and went to a land he did not know. How curious it is that our tradition makes no claim that we were the original inhabitants of the Land of Israel - but then again, this is the same honest tradition that insists that we recall our degradation as slaves in Egypt.
Modern Zionism began with Theodor Herzl, an assimilated Jewish journalist in Vienna. The Jews of Europe were electrified by his platform of re-creating a Jewish homeland in Israel. (Things were so bad for the Jews of Europe that at one point he even considered accepting Uganda as an alternate safe haven for Jews from pogroms.)
Of course, Zionism did not disappear for 1,800 years in between the Roman conquest of Israel and Herzl. Jews everywhere prayed, as they do now, for the return to Zion and the end of the exile. Jews, wherever they are, pray toward Jerusalem.
The books here are histories of Zionism and Zionists, both before and after Israel's re-creation in 1948. For more books on Israel, see our Israel page.
