The Blessing of a Skinned Knee: Using Jewish Teachings to Raise Self-Reliant Children (0684862972) - Reviews and Prices
In the trenches of a typical day, every parent encounters a child afflicted with ingratitude and entitlement. In a world where material abundance abounds, parents want so badly to raise self-disciplined, appreciative, and resourceful children who are not spoiled by the plentitude around them. But how to accomplish this feat? The answer has eluded the best-intentioned mothers and fathers who overprotect, overindulge, and overschedule their children's lives.
Dr. Mogel helps parents learn how to turn their children's worst traits into their greatest attributes. Starting with stories of everyday parenting problems and examining them through the lens of the Torah, the Talmud, and important Jewish teachings, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee shows parents how to teach children to honor their parents and to respect others, escape the danger of overvaluing children's need for self-expression so that their kids don't become "little attorneys," accept that their children are both ordinary and unique, and treasure the power and holiness of the present moment.
It is Mogel's singular achievement that she makes these teachings relevant for any era and any household of any faith. A unique parenting book, designed for use both in the home and in parenting classes, with an on-line teaching guide to help facilitate its use, The Blessing of a Skinned Knee is both inspiring and effective in the day-to-day challenge of raising self-reliant children.

Good Parenting Techniques For Raising Children Who Are Emotionally Healthy:
This book is just delightful to read. I may not have agreed with everything, but I found some excellent parenting advice to help raise children who are emotionally healthy and pleasant to be around. I recommend this book. It will get you thinking.
A book for ALL parents:
I am a developmental psychologist and I think this is the best parenting book I have ever read. Recent research suggests that children today experience significantly higher rates of many forms of mental distress compared with children 50 or 60 years ago. Something is wrong with our culture and how our children are parented. Parents need encouragement, wisdom and helpful techniques. This book provides all three. I used this book with a parents in a church discussion group and it was very successful. The... more info
What's really important:
I bought this book for my daughter raising 2 boys in an environment where the pressure to succeed and excel in all areas is ever present. This book is filled with wonderful advise to help parents understand the everyday pressures they can get pulled into and how to rise above them and live a more rewarding family life and raise happier children.
Nothing Jewish about this book:
I am not sure how Wendy Mogel came up with the idea that her book was a manual on how to raise children the Jewish way. Perhaps it is because her target audience is the wealthy Jewish populace of Los Angeles (her clients). However, just because she includes Jewish blessings does not make it a Jewish manual! I don't think that a Jewish mother would settle for being just "good enough". This is what Ms. Mogel encourages moms to be... "good enough". If new moms say to themselves that they will just be "good... more info
